A Virtuous Business is the most non-K-drama K-drama ever and why I love it!
The story of four rural women in South Korea. A virtual business She talks about her search for financial and personal freedom and how she started her adult products business in 1992. They are four very different women from different walks of life who have self-examined their lives and what they can do to make it better and happier. Since sex is a taboo subject in most Asian households, especially for women, Jeong Suk And her team was constantly shamed by society and surprisingly by other women! Because of course how dare they talk about sex and find the G-spot! Whoa! Because it breaks these stereotypes, a virtuous business is truly one-of-a-kind and one that will stimulate important conversations among women!

Every highlight of the show has stuck with me!
Women also want to have sex for pleasure.
While this may not have been a thought that crossed many women’s minds in the 90s, you’d be surprised how this is still the case in 2024. There are many families who still do not see women as reproductive machines, they cannot wrap their heads around the fact that maybe women also enjoy sex? A Good Business carried this idea throughout the series and I loved it for that reason alone! How women in all walks of life have been herded together and forced to think about their likes and dislikes in the bedroom, how they can express themselves through sex, this on-screen moment. There was a need.
It makes it normal to use sex toys and play with different types of lingerie in the bedroom.
Using sex toys is a huge part of pleasure for men and women. But many people are not even aware of the different types of sex toys that are available. Not only does the show talk about it, but we also see the main characters researching it so they can understand it and better sell it to other women.
It promotes self-pleasure for women.
There is a scene in the show where Jeong Suk introduces a vibrator to his customers for the first time. They saw it as if it had fallen from an alien planet. Some people even thought it was a facial massager and when they found out what it actually was, of course there was a huge backlash and they threw it away. But it was Jeong Suk who convinced them that it could take you to a magical place that most women would want to visit. After trying it herself, she can attest to the fact that they will all get the happy ending they deserve!
It does its best to break the taboo of sex in Asian households and do any kind of business around it.
Jeong-suk and his entire team face immense punishment from his townspeople for selling sex products. Most of them who made Jeong-suk feel like an outcast were actually women. They called it a ‘disgusting thing’ because it had to do with sex, and the truth is, that’s not even an exaggerated reaction, it’s exactly how people would react in real life. This normalizes the fact that there are many types of businesses and that sex toys are indeed a huge market.
It depicts different types of families and how each of them is special in their own way.
Jeong-suk and Lee Joo-ri are both single mothers working hard to support their sons. Seo Young-Bok is a mother of four with another on the way. She is the sole breadwinner of her family while her husband is a stay-at-home dad. Geum-Hee decides not to try for a child due to her infertility issues and so it’s been her and her husband all these years. The show highlights how all types of families exist, each feeling like the grass is greener on the other side. The ‘nuclear’ family is beyond what we were taught in school because life is not as black and white as it seems.
It was set in the early 90s but it is a story that is still very relevant.
As mentioned earlier, you’d think that women not being shamed for having sex for pleasure would be a 90s issue, but it still happens. While the series suggests that people are backwards because it’s the 90s, it’s actually a smart move by the makers to hold a mirror of reality to the people of today.
It’s a sweet reminder to get the kind of love you actually deserve.
Jeong Suk’s first husband put no effort into their relationship. He hated her insistence in bed, in fact he hated her having a mind of her own at all. But after their divorce, Do Hyun came into her life and accepted her, her son and her career and gave her the love she truly deserved. Then comes Lee Joo-ri, who was a single mother from the beginning of the show until she met Dae-geon who wasn’t her type. She was always open to dating but dated men who didn’t really understand her feelings until a nerdy guy like Dae-Geun came along. Until he was well enough to be serious, he was casually open to them. This was a couple I did not see coming!
