About BSF

The Border Security Force (BSF) is India’s border security agency on its borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. It is one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) of India, and was raised on 1 December 1965 after the 1965 war “to ensure the security of India’s borders and for matters connected therewith”. It has various active roles during the initiation of the war. It is the only CAPF to have a water wing, an air wing and an artillery regiment. It comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The BSF has its own small force or “cadre” of officers. However, its head, designated as the Director General (DG), has been an officer of the Indian Police Service since its inception.
