In 2019, while on a trip to Morocco, Brooklyn-based photojournalist Gary Hay encountered an unexpected surprise with his regular McDonald’s order.

“When I started researching McDonald’s properties in other countries, there was very little information, and most of it was scattered,” he told Business Insider.

Five years later, the James Beard Award-winning photojournalist has traveled to more than 55 countries on six continents and compiled the 420-page book “Mecatles: A Global Guide to the Golden Arches,” to be released in November. Given that about 27,000 of the brand’s 40,000 restaurants are located outside the United States, one way the company maintains its popularity and tries to push its international sales is by selling locally popular items to McDonald’s.
