Derbyshire 46 for 1 trail Glamorgan 237 (Thompson 7-65) by 191 runs
Glamorgan’s top scorer was Kiran Carlson with 74 but regular wickets throughout the day meant the home side had a top partnership of 60.
Derbyshire faced 16 overs when they were reduced to 46 for 1 with Louis Rees a man down. It will be Derbyshire who are the happier of the two sides but there is enough on this pitch to suggest this could be a tight contest.
After being put into bat by Derbyshire, Glamorgan looked reasonably settled in the opening overs. That changed when New Zealand international Blair Tickner struck. He got admirable movement through the air and the seam and had Billy Root caught for 23 off his fourth delivery.
This brought Sam North East to the crease. As a man who had scored 521 runs in first-class cricket since his last outing, and fresh off a record 355 not out at Lord’s last week, it was Derbyshire’s wicket that stood out the most. Will be more rewarded. It was Tickner who delivered once again, with a ball that came back towards North East and hit his stumps when he was only on 11.
A 60-run partnership between Karan Carlson and Zain Al Hasan brought Glamorgan back into the game after the lunch break. Zayn played some lovely drives down the straight ground en route to 35 and looked more and more comfortable against the Kookaburra’s aging ball, but a well-flown delivery from Thomson kept him at the ball. Seen advancing down the pitch from and was well stumped by Brook Guest. .
Carlson was the fourth man to go, squared by a ball from Thomson who went lbw for his second score in the seventies in as many innings this season.
Spin became a threat as the Glamorgan innings progressed as Thomson bowled with real flair to keep things tight and take wickets. It inspired a brilliant drive from Colin Ingram which was caught at cover and Chris Cook was brilliantly taken at leg slip by David Lloyd who was captaining Derbyshire against his former county.
Thompson continued to cause problems for the Glamorgan batting line-up, dismissing hard-hitting Dan Duthwaite for 23 when he claimed a low catch off his own bowling. He then tried to bowl James Harris’ sweep shot for just 4.
It was Thompson who ended the Glamorgan innings when Mason Crane missed Hawke’s attempt at long-on and was bowled for 13. Thompson bowled unchanged for 25 overs from the river tight end which saw Glamorgan lose five wickets for 36. runs
Thompson’s 7 for 65 surpassed his previous career best of 6 for 138 which he achieved for Cardiff MCCU against Hampshire in 2016. It was the best return for a Derbyshire spinner since Geoff Miller’s 8 for 70 against Leicestershire in 1982.
