The makers of the Ajay Devgan starrer sports biopic Playground The district court in Mysore has indicated its intention to move the Karnataka High Court after the order to stay the release of the film following the alleged plagiarism claim.

Playground Dramatizes the life journey of Syed Abdul Rahim, the football coach responsible for India’s second gold medal win at the 1962 Asian Games.

Karnataka-based screenwriter Anil Kumar has accused the makers of stealing his script based on India’s sports history. According to a report by News18, Kumar claimed in 2010 that he had written a story based on India’s elimination from the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Years later, he approached ad filmmaker Sukhdas Suryavanshi and shared the script.

“In 2010, I started writing the story and in 2018, I posted a poster about it, and I contacted Ad Director Sukhdas Suryavanshi through my LinkedIn post. He invited me to Bombay (Mumbai). And asked to get the script. I have the entire chat history. He told me that he wanted me to meet Aamir Khan, but I couldn’t meet him due to some reasons. I gave him the story and the screenwriters. Association (SWA),” Kumar was quoted as saying by News18.

“Recently, I heard that a movie called Playground is being released. I was surprised because I have the same story. When I saw the teaser and their statements, I knew this was my story. He himself has made this film by twisting the main story. I have named the story Padakanduka,” added Kumar.

In response to the court order, Pankej Kharabinda, COO of producer Boney Kapoor’s production company, Bayview Projects LLP, posted a statement on social media.

Mr. Kharabinda said he plans to challenge the “one-sided” order in the Karnataka High Court, adding that there is no bar to the film’s release.

“We have just been served with a copy of the District Judge’s order staying the release of this film. At the outset, we would like to place on record that the said order passed by the District Judge, without giving us an opportunity to be heard, is a is an ex parte order. No notice was given to us prior to the filing of the said suit or the hearing of the matter,” the statement read.

The makers added that the order was passed after the release of the film and thus, “any order passed which re-trains the release of the film is void in law”.

“However, we are filing an appeal against this order in the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka. We will refer the matter before the Hon’ble High Court for immediate relief to stay the execution of the said order. Without, we are taking all the steps as legally advised to us, please be assured that the release of the film can go ahead. Once we take the matter before the Hon’ble High Court.
