United Nations:
Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia began to assume responsibility as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.
His two-year term officially began on January 1. Thursday is the council’s first working day for 2025 after the Christmas and New Year break, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Five countries replaced Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland.
A flag-raising ceremony was held at the United Nations headquarters in New York to mark the commencement of his duties.
Kazakh Ambassador to the United Nations Kirat Umarov, who presided over the ceremony, congratulated the five new members of the Council and wished them success in their two-year term.
A flag installation ceremony for new members of the Security Council was initiated by Kazakhstan in 2018.
Algerian UN Ambassador Amr Bendjama thanked the outgoing members as President of the Security Council for the month of January and welcomed the new arrivals.
Serving on the Security Council is a “great honor” as well as “a great responsibility,” he said, urging all Council members to be tireless and effective in addressing the challenges facing the world. “Work methodically” and uphold the values of multilateralism.
The permanent representatives of the five new members gave brief speeches before hoisting their national flags outside the Security Council chamber.
The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members – Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States – and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms. Five non-permanent members are replaced annually.
