An American family’s trip to Walt Disney World turned into a nightmare when their 5-year-old son fell while riding one of the theme park’s thrill rides. According to the New York Post, the incident took place on September 21. Ernesto Tagle, 5, stopped breathing and took about 20 seconds to ride a closed roller coaster at Epcot. His mother, Christine, who was sitting right behind him, realized something was wrong when she couldn’t feel a pulse. “I was screaming, hitting him, and saying something wrong,” she recalled.
In an Instagram post, the family shared that the mother performed CPR on her son after the roller coaster ended but was helped by a passing couple, a nurse and EMT, and a Disney employee who delivered an automated external defibrillator to restart the boy’s heart. He was taken to the hospital by helicopter.
The 5-year-old was taken to three different hospitals and given “test after test” before he was diagnosed with catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) — a rare heart condition that is extremely dangerous. Can flare up during excitement or activity, Post said.
A doctor placed a device in a 5-year-old boy’s chest to treat life-threatening heart arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest. The Instagram post said the toddler is recovering with no brain or heart damage.
The victim’s family also said that their “warrior” son is at home and fond of riding his motorcycle. The family said they are grateful to those who took action to save their son. He noted that “not all (heroes) wear hats” and called Ernesto his “miracle child”. He concluded the post by encouraging others to “get CPR certified” because “you never know when you’ll need it.”
