Buenos Aires:
Argentina’s President Javier Meli fired Foreign Minister Diana Mondino on Wednesday after the country voted at the United Nations to lift the six-decade-old US embargo on Cuba.
“Argentina’s new foreign minister is Mr. Gerardo Worthen,” presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni wrote on X, hours after Argentina joined 186 other UN members in lifting the 1962 embargo on communist-ruled Cuba. Voted in favour.
Worthen was previously Argentina’s ambassador to the United States.
Only two countries, the United States and Israel, both allies of Mali, voted against Wednesday’s resolution, while one country, Moldova, abstained.
Moments after Mondino’s ouster was announced, Meli retweeted a post by a lawmaker who said he was “proud of a government that does not support or collaborate with dictators. Viva #CubaLibre “
Argentina has traditionally voted against embargoing Cuba.
Local media quoted Foreign Ministry sources as saying that although it was diplomatically awkward for Argentina to oppose the US and Israel, any future resolution on Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands would include Cuba and its allies. Allies’ votes will be required. area
