The Israeli military said the air force used “accurate fire” to target “a terrorist belonging to the military wing of Hamas” near the school.

“The incident is under review,” the army said in a statement.

Officials in the Hamas-controlled area said earlier attacks on schools had killed at least 20 people.

On Saturday, 16 people were killed in an Israeli attack on the UN-run al-Juni school in Nusirat, central Gaza, according to the health ministry.

Four people were killed in an attack on the Holy Family School in Gaza City the following day, according to the Gaza Civil Defense Agency.

The school’s owners, the Latin Patriarchate, said hundreds of people filled the grounds at the time.

Another UNRWA-run school in Nousirat was targeted on Monday. A local hospital said several people had been taken for treatment.

Israel said it had targeted “several terrorists” using the school as cover.

Hamas has denied Israeli claims that it uses schools, hospitals and other civilian facilities for military purposes.

According to UNRWA, more than 500 people have died in schools.
