Berlin:
German Chancellor Olaf Schulz said on Saturday that the principle of sovereign borders must be protected, days after US President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out power to seize Greenland.
Addressing his Social Democratic Party’s congress ahead of next month’s general election, Schulz said: “The principle of the inevitability of borders applies to every country, whether in the East or the West,” including Russia’s attack. Referring to Ukraine
He said that this is a principle that should be followed by every state, whether it is a small state or a big and powerful one.
“No country is another’s backyard, no country should be afraid of its bigger neighbors. This is central to what we call Western values.”
Trump raised alarm on Tuesday when he refused to rule out military intervention in the Panama Canal and Greenland, both of which he has said he wants the United States to control.
That prompted Scholes to tell a hastily called press conference on Wednesday that Trump had created a “remarkable understanding” among EU leaders.
