Ottawa:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday for what Canadian and US media said was a meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago luxury estate.
Flight trackers first spotted a jet broadcasting the prime minister’s call sign en route to the South American state, days after a visit in which Trump threatened to impose tariffs on America’s northern neighbor after taking office. was given
According to the website Flightradar, the Canadian leader’s plane landed at Palm Beach International Airport late in the afternoon.
Canada’s public broadcaster CBC said Trudeau would dine with Trump, and that his public safety minister, Dominique LeBlanc, was accompanying him on the trip.
The Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately confirm the unannounced visit.
Trump sent shock waves across Canada on Monday when he announced pending import tariffs against neighboring Canada and Mexico and rival China in social media posts.
More than three-quarters of Canada’s exports, or Can$592.7 billion ($423 billion), went to the United States last year, and nearly two million Canadian jobs depend on the trade.
Canada is considering possible retaliatory tariffs against the US, a government source told AFP.
Some have suggested that Trump’s tariff threat could be a bluster, or an opening salvo in future trade negotiations. But Trudeau dismissed those ideas when he spoke to reporters in Prince Edward Island province.
“Donald Trump, when he makes statements like this, he intends to follow through on them,” Trudeau said. “There’s no question about it.”
