In a recent case in China, a man was jailed after leaving his newlywed wife, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, just two months after their marriage. The court labeled her actions as “monstrous” and ruled that her neglect and emotional abuse violated her legal duties as a spouse. According to South China Morning PostThe man, identified only by his surname Feng, married his wife, surnamed Wang, in 2022. Two months later, Wang was diagnosed with colon cancer, which had already reached its final stage.

Feng initially cares for her but soon uses work commitments in another city as an excuse to avoid his responsibilities and abandon her. Despite Wang and his family’s desperate attempts to contact him, Feng did not respond. Left alone to face his ordeal, Wang struggled financially, accumulating considerable hospital debt. Heartbreakingly, she died after spending more than 200 days in the hospital.

After Feng gave up, Wang’s family took legal action, suing him in the Shitai County People’s Court. The lawsuit targeted Fang’s refusal to provide care and financial support during Wang’s battle with terminal cancer. Feng also proposed divorce twice while Wang was seriously ill.

Wang’s father denounced Feng’s “evil behavior”, revealing his unsuccessful attempts to reach her through phone calls, messaging apps and even police intervention. After being recalled to court, Feng eventually reconciles with Wang’s family and gains their forgiveness.

Feng’s shocking actions sparked outrage on mainland Chinese social media, with netizens condemning him for abandoning his terminally ill wife. Many called for tougher laws to protect vulnerable family members and hold those who abandon loved ones accountable. One user said, “He is not human. He left his wife when she needed him the most.”

Another remarked, “What a cold-hearted person. It crosses all moral boundaries.”

In a strikingly similar case, a man from the southern province of Hunan faced serious consequences for abandoning his sick wife in 2018. After being diagnosed with uremia, she refused to return home to care for him or cover his medical expenses. After her death, the man’s indifference continued, as he failed to arrange or attend her funeral. Acting promptly, the court imposed a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years.
