The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) said in a report on Wednesday that Elon Musk’s X, Community Notes’ crowd-sourced fact-checking feature, “fails to counter false claims” about the US election.
Of the 283 misleading posts analyzed by CCDH, 209 or 74% of the posts did not display valid notices to all X users to correct false and misleading claims about the election, the report said.
“The 209 misleading posts in our sample that did not display community notices available to all users accumulated 2.2 billion views,” CCDH said, adding that the company is investing in safety and transparency. Emphasized to do.
X did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
X launched its “Community Notes” feature last year, which allows users to comment on posts to flag false or misleading content, rather than a dedicated team of fact-checkers. Crowdsourcing fact-checking.
The report comes after X lost a lawsuit brought by the CCDH earlier this year that accused the social media platform of allowing the rise of hate speech.
Social media platforms, including X, have come under scrutiny for years for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories, including misinformation about elections and vaccines.
Last month, the secretaries of state of five US states last month urged billionaire Musk to fix X’s AI chatbot, saying it had spread false information about the Nov. 5 election.
Musk, who endorsed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump last month, has himself been accused of spreading misinformation. Polls show Trump in a tight race with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
