Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Khalil arrived here on Thursday on a three-day visit to explore ways to strengthen bilateral ties in several key areas including maritime security, trade and investment.
Khalil’s visit to India has come about three months after the visit of Maldives President Mohammad Mueez to India.
On Friday, the Maldivian Foreign Minister will discuss almost all aspects of India-Maldives relations with his Indian counterpart Dr. S. Jaishankar.
“Working towards the shared India-Maldives vision of a ‘Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on ‘X.’ Welcome”.
The Maldives is one of India’s key maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean region and overall bilateral relations, including in the areas of defense and security, have grown under the previous government in Mali.
Relations between India and the Maldives came under severe strain when Mr Moizu, known for his pro-China leanings, took charge of the top post in November 2023.
Within hours of his swearing-in, he had demanded the withdrawal of Indian troops from his country. After that, Indian military personnel were replaced by civilians.
However, Mr Muso vowed to boost ties with India during his visit to Delhi in October.
