Beirut:

Israel bombed Syrian army positions south of Aleppo on Thursday, a war monitor and local residents said, in the latest such attacks since the ouster of longtime strongman Bashar al-Assad.

Residents reported hearing large explosions in the area, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacks targeted defense and research facilities.

At least seven large explosions were heard following an Israeli airstrike on defense factories south of Aleppo, the Observatory said.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties in the attacks.

A resident of al-Safira area told AFP on condition of anonymity: “They hit defense factories, launched five attacks… The attacks were very powerful. It shook the ground, opened doors and windows. Gone — the strongest attack I ever heard” … it turned night into day.”

Since Islamist-led rebels overthrew Assad in early December, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes on Syrian military assets, which it says are aimed at preventing military weapons from falling into enemy hands. .
