Sydney, Australia:
Australian authorities described a spray of anti-Semitic graffiti in Sydney as “monstrous” after more property was vandalized early Saturday. Vandals spray-painted a red swastika outside the entrance of an inner-city synagogue overnight, while a house in Sydney’s affluent east was covered in anti-Semitic slogans, police said.
Earlier on Friday, vandals painted a swastika on another synagogue in a different part of Sydney.
“These people are determined to split our community in two,” state Premier Chris Munns said.
“We will always call these acts for what they are — horrific and horrific.”
Masked arsonists torched a Melbourne synagogue in December, prompting the government to create a federal task force to target anti-Semitism.
As in much of the world, the war in Gaza has fueled tensions between supporters of Israel and the Palestinians in Australia, leading to regular protests.
