London:
Britain’s Conservative Party leadership candidate Priti Patel has dropped out of the race after the first round of voting.
Ms Patel, who was home secretary in former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government, is running to replace Rishi Sink as party leader. Mr Sink resigned after the Conservatives lost the general election in July.
Former Immigration Minister Robert Jenreux finished first with 28 votes, followed by Cammy Badenoch with 22 votes. James Cleverley finished third as he received 21 votes and Tom Tugendhat received 17 votes. Mel Stride finished fifth with 16 votes and Ms. Patel finished last with 14 votes.
The next vote will take place next Tuesday, leaving four candidates ahead of the party’s annual conference at the end of September.
After the conference from October 8, there will be multiple rounds of voting. Voting will continue for three days until only two candidates remain.
MPs will then elect their leader, the result of which will be announced on November 2.
During her tenure as home secretary, Ms Patel was known for her tough stance on immigration. He spearheaded the Conservative government’s flagship scheme to send some refugees to Rwanda.
In his Tory leadership campaign, he promised to unify the party and prepare it for the next general election.
