Protesters have reportedly set fire to the home of former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe bin Murtaza as violence and chaos continue in the country after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the nation.
Mashrafe bin Murtaza is a Member of Parliament from Naril 2 Constituency of Khulna Division, having won the seat for the second time in a row as an Awami League candidate during the Bangladesh general elections earlier this year.
Local media reported that protesters ransacked Musharraf bin Murtaza’s house and set it on fire after Sheikh Hasina left the country following massive student protests.
Mashrafe bin Murtaza led Bangladesh in 117 matches across all formats. He took 390 international wickets during his long cricket career and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs and 54 T20Is.
After quitting sports, he entered politics in 2018 by joining Hasina-led Awami League and was elected Member of Parliament from Naril-2 constituency.
Bangladesh’s leading daily ‘Dhaka Tribune’ reported that the protesters also set fire to the district Awami League office and vandalized the house of its president Subash Chandra Bose.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina landed at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad near Delhi on Monday evening, arriving in a Bangladesh Air Force military transport plane as thousands of protesters stormed and ransacked the Prime Minister’s official residence, Gunbhaban, in Dhaka. .
Multiple reports suggest that she will be leaving for London soon.
