Renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matthew Varghese was named The One International at The One Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony in Hong Kong.
Launched in 2012 by David Harilela and Rotary International District 3450, the ONE Humanitarian Award celebrates individuals who have dedicated their lives to ending pain, suffering and poverty.
Notables from Africa, India and Hong Kong were awarded over HK$2.5 million.
Dr. Varghese is best known for reconstructive surgery for polio victims in India. He is a hero to his patients and other admirers, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
On his Facebook page, Mr Gates called Dr Varghese “my inspiration and my real-life hero” for fighting and (dedicating his life) to eradicate polio in India. He is also the co-author of the book ‘When Someone Has Hurt’, a basic medical guide that has been translated into five languages, and ‘Prehospital Trauma Care System’, published by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Father John Wotherspoon, a dedicated priest who helps drug addicts and the homeless in Yao Mati, was awarded The One Hong Kong.
International finalists included Dr. Satish Gogolwar, who provides life-saving medical services to tribal communities in India, and Dr. Paul Thistle, a surgeon and educator who is making significant progress in Zimbabwe.
Finalists from Hong Kong included Eli Fu Nga Nee, founder of the J Life Foundation, which supports the underprivileged, and Morgan Lam Kai-fai of Hope Through Music, which empowers underprivileged youth through music education.
The One has recognized 74 heroes and contributed more than US$3.3 million to humanitarian projects, impacting more than three hundred thousand lives globally.
