Five people were killed and about 28 injured throughout the day.

Moscow:

Ukraine fired missiles and drones into Russia’s southwestern region of Kursk overnight, the local governor said Wednesday, a day after pro-Kiev forces crossed the border with tanks and armored vehicles.

“Two Ukrainian missiles were shot down by air defense systems in the Kursk region,” regional governor Alexei Smirnov wrote on the Telegram social media channel, adding that three drones were also destroyed.

On Tuesday, Moscow’s defense ministry said it had deployed its troops and aviation units to the border in Kursk after an early morning raid by Ukrainian units – the latest such attack in the conflict.

Russian officials said the attack was carried out by about 300 soldiers, 11 tanks and more than 20 armored vehicles.

Five people died and about 28 were injured throughout the day, Smirnov and local health officials said.

Kursk is located just across from Simi in the northeastern region of Ukraine.

Ukrainian drones also targeted residential buildings in the border regions of Voronezh and Belgorod, causing damage but no casualties, local officials said on Wednesday.

Ukrainian fighters have made several brief incursions into Russia since the start of the conflict in February 2022, including by units of the Russian Volunteer Corps fighting in support of Kiev and the Freedom of Russia Legion.
