A Thai woman, accused of being one of the country’s biggest serial killers, has been sentenced to death for poisoning her friend with cyanide. This is the first of 14 murder cases involving 36-year-old Sarat Rangasyothapuran, whose alleged crimes have shocked the nation, according to The Guardian.

On Wednesday, a court in Bangkok found Sarat guilty of murdering his friend Sripuran Khan Wong. The two met in April 2022 to participate in a Buddhist ritual of releasing fish into the Mae Klong River near Bangkok. Shortly after the ritual, Sripuran collapsed and died. Investigators later found traces of cyanide in his body.

Authorities have since linked Sarat to the 2015 series of cyanide poisonings. “The court’s decision is correct,” said Seriporan’s mother, Tongpan Kyachanasri, after the verdict. “I want to tell my daughter that I miss her so much and that justice has been done to her today.”

Police revealed that Sarat borrowed 300,000 baht from some of the victims, stole their jewelery and mobile phones after killing them. He allegedly lured 15 people, of whom only one survived, to eat poisoned “herbal capsules”.

Deputy National Police Chief Surachet Hockpern explained Sarat’s motives: “She asked people she knew for money because she had a lot of credit card debt… and if they asked her for their money back, He started beating them.”

Sarat faces 13 additional murder charges and is accused of nearly 80 crimes in total. Her ex-husband, a police lieutenant colonel, was sentenced to 16 months in prison, while her ex-lawyer was sentenced to two years for his involvement in Sripuran’s murder.

Thailand has seen several high-profile poisonings in the past, but the alleged crimes in Surat stand out for their scale and severity.
