The consequences of the AMOC shutdown are profound and far-reaching. Dramatic changes in global climate patterns are expected, including extreme weather events, altered precipitation patterns, and disruptions to agriculture. Europe and North America may experience a significant drop in temperature, while areas such as the Amazon rainforest experience drastic changes in climate.
“It’s really worrying,” said René van Westen, a marine and environmental researcher at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and co-author of the study.
“All the negative effects of anthropogenic climate change, they’re still going to continue, like more heat waves, more droughts, more floods,” he told CNN. “Then if you also have the termination of the AMOC … the climate will worsen.”
The impacts on ecosystems and human societies are equally severe. Marine life dependent on the AMOC for nutrient distribution will be threatened, and coastal communities face increasing threats from rising sea levels and stronger storms.
Physical oceanographer Stefan Rahmstorff of the University of Potsdam in Germany said the collapse of the AMOC is “a really big risk that we should do everything possible to avoid.” which were not included in the latest research.
