Washington:
Iranian cyber attackers provided “stolen, non-public” campaign material from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to the staff of his then-White House rival Joe Biden, US officials said on Wednesday.
U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies said the hackers “sent unsolicited emails to individuals associated with President Biden’s campaign containing an excerpt from stolen, non-public campaign materials from former President Trump.” was.”
Biden was the Democratic presidential nominee at the time, before dramatically breaking away in July and endorsing his vice president, Kamala Harris.
A joint statement from the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said none of Biden’s campaign staff responded to the emails.
In August, the same agencies first blamed Iran for the hack, alleging that Tehran was trying to influence the 2024 election. Iran denies these allegations.
“Foreign actors are increasing their election influence activities” as Election Day approaches in November, the US statement said, adding that Russia, Iran and China are “expanding divisions in American society for their own benefit.” Trying to give in some way.”
Iranian cyber attackers also tried to share information stolen from the Trump campaign with American media outlets, US agencies said. He did not name the shops.
In August, Iran denied the allegations, with its mission to the United Nations challenging Washington to release the evidence.
“Such allegations are baseless and devoid of any standing,” the mission said at the time.
“As we have previously stated, the Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention or intent to interfere in the US presidential election.”
With the United States holding elections on November 5, both the Trump and Harris campaigns have said they have been targeted by cyber attacks in recent weeks.
US-based tech companies have also said they have detected such attacks.
The Trump campaign said on Wednesday that the plot, attributed to Tehran, was “evidence that the Iranians are actively meddling in the election to help Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.”
Trump campaign press secretary Carolyn Levitt said it was “because they know President Trump will restore his tough sanctions and stand up to his reign of terror.”
In 2016, a hack of Democratic National Committee emails — blamed on the Russians — exposed internal party communications, including those about candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump, who would go on to win the election, was criticized for encouraging the hack.
Harris’ campaign said on Aug. 13 that it, too, had been targeted by foreign hackers, but did not indicate which country was behind the effort.
