New Delhi:

Iran will do whatever it can in the case of Indian nurse Namsha Priya, who is facing the death penalty in Yemen, a senior Iranian official said on Thursday.

Priya, who hails from Kolingode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, has been found guilty of murdering a Yemeni national in July 2017.

The 37-year-old nurse is currently being held in a prison in Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, which is under the control of the Iran-backed Houthis.

“We will take up the matter. It seems that he has been accused of murder. We will do whatever we can in this matter on humanitarian grounds,” the Iranian official told a group of journalists in Delhi.

A Yemeni national, Talal Abdu Mehdi, died of an overdose of sedatives allegedly administered by Priya to obtain his passport.

According to reports, Priya was sentenced to death by a trial court in 2020 while Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the verdict in November 2023.

President of Yemen Rashid Al Alimi approved the death sentence of Priya a few days ago.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday that India is providing all possible assistance to explore relevant options in the matter.

“We are aware of the sentence handed down to Namsha Priya in Yemen. We understand that Priya’s family is exploring relevant options,” Jaiswal said.

He said that the government is providing all possible help in this matter.

Priya’s mother Prema Kumari, who is currently in Sana’a, has made an emotional appeal to the Indian government to spare her daughter’s life.

In a video message from Yemen, Prema Kumari urged the Center and other authorities to intervene immediately.

“This is my last plea. He has only a few days left. Every member of the Action Council has worked tirelessly to raise funds. I request the Center and the Council to do everything possible to save his life. Do it,” he said.
