Passport is one of the most important travel documents. In addition to confirming international travel, a passport also serves as proof of identity and nationality. Most governments issue their own passports that citizens can apply for – usually for a fee. This fee depends on the country and duration of tenure. Based on these fees, the market compared recently shared data regarding the cost of obtaining a passport, which could vary anywhere between Rs 19,000 to Rs 1,500 in 2024.
Interestingly, Mexican passports are the most expensive passports in the world. The fee for a 10-year passport in Mexico is around INR 19,464. Report. The country offers three types of passports, based on their validity, and all of them are among the top 10 most expensive passports. Mexico’s six-year passport is the fourth most expensive, while its three-year passport is the ninth most expensive.
Australia has the second most expensive passport which costs around Rs 19,023 and is valid for 10 years. Next comes the US, which is priced at Rs 13,899 and has the same duration.

On the other hand, the United Arab Emirates reportedly provides the cheapest passports in the world. The cost of getting a passport for the UAE is just Rs 1,492. The Indian passport, priced at Rs 1,523 for a 10-year validity, is listed as the second cheapest worldwide as of April 2024.
Other countries with cheaper passports include Hungary, Spain, Kenya and South Africa.
In particular, according to the report, the Indian passport offers the best value in terms of ‘annual cost’. This is mainly due to the validity period as well as the fact that Indian nationals have visa-free access to 58 countries in the world. The Indian passport has been ranked 82nd in the Henley Powerful Passport Index 2024.
