Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke to his US counterpart Joe Biden on Friday and thanked him for his “unwavering support” less than two weeks before the Democrat left office.

Biden has raced to maximize aid to Kiev ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, amid fears that the Republican will reduce support for the US ally once in power.

“I spoke to (Biden) and expressed my condolences for the devastating wildfires and tragic loss of life in California,” Zielinski said in a post on X.

“I also thanked him for his unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence and for America’s important role in unifying the international community,” he added.

The Biden administration has been steadfast in its support for Ukraine, announcing nearly $6 billion in new military and budget aid last month before Trump’s return.

Trump has promised to resolve the conflict “within 24 hours” of taking office, raising fears in Ukraine that he will be forced to make major concessions in exchange for peace.

Moscow stepped up its advance in Ukraine last year, as Kiev’s overstretched military was exhausted and undermanned.
