Oh Melbourne A man who started a side hustle to earn some extra cash is now a millionaire at just 25 years old.

Vinol Karunaratne arrived in Australia nine years ago with barely any money from Sri Lanka and began studying and working the night shift at 7-Eleven.

In 2019, armed with a few items, he joined Air Tasker and started doing some end-of-lease cleaning jobs.

“When I started I didn’t even have much equipment. I had a vacuum, a mop and a bucket and some rags,” he told 7News.

“It was the stuff I had in my house.”

Business grew rapidly and it wasn’t long before he quit 7-Eleven and took on cleaning jobs full-time.

He sweeps about a dozen houses every week and is one of Airtasker’s top ten earners.

“I mainly clean the bond (end of lease) and then steam clean the carpets and clean the offices,” he said.

Five years later and the 25-year-old has earned $1.2 million and put down a deposit on a three-bedroom house in Melbourne’s north and bought a dream car.

He also saved enough money to buy a luxury apartment in Sri Lanka for his parents and a little extra to start investing.

“I earn between $1,000 and $1,400 a day,” he said.

“It’s physical work, but it’s good money.

“I enjoy flexibility and working on my own terms. I’m my own boss.”

Karunaratne said there is no shortage of work and he would never go back to a day job.

“To earn that kind of money, like $1.2 million, that takes a lot of hard work, it’s really impressive,” Tim Fung, founder and CEO of Air Tasker, told 7News.

While GDP growth is slowing, the services platform has seen a 40 per cent jump in registrations as cash-strapped Australians look to boost their incomes.

This year the website hit the $600 million milestone, which Taskers achieved.

Unskilled labor is in high demand and those who do removals, cleaning and gardening can earn up to $308 for each job.

Fung said the Air Tasker experienced a huge boom during the spring and summer.

“Gardening comes online, spring cleaning is a real thing and people will start moving more houses and things like that, so it’s really our best season because we’re in October, November, December,” he said. And heading into the new year,” he said.

Karunaratne advises anyone who wants a side hustle to try starting Air Tasker.

“There are a lot of jobs (on Air Tasker) and it’s always safe,” he said.

“You get your payment and everything is good. You have community guidelines and things like that.
