The coastal state of Goa has been embroiled in a massive ‘cash for jobs’ scam, leaving citizens shocked and angry. Dozens of people were cheated out of crores of rupees on false promises of government jobs. Police have so far registered 30 cases and linked more than 30 people to the scam. The scandal has put the ruling BJP on the defensive as several party officials and their associates have been named in the probe. Opposition parties are demanding a judicial probe and questioning Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s role in the matter. Goa Forward Party leader Vijay Sardesai has alleged ministerial involvement and demanded an impartial probe. Amid these developments, CM Pramod Sawant said that no one has been given a clean chit yet. With Goa’s unemployment rate at 13.7%, the highest in India, the controversy has fueled concerns about employment opportunities for the state’s youth. The opposition has stepped up its attacks, with protests and public outcry rising every day.
