Home Minister Amit Shah in a statement presented in the Rajya Sabha said that Article 370 and Article 35A will be abolished. He also proposed a new bill for the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir.
President Ram Nath Kovind has signed the notification to abrogate Article 370.
The decision came amid ongoing tensions. Boiling in Jammu and Kashmir And 35,000 additional troops were moved into the state in the days leading up to the announcement.
As a precautionary measure, the government has imposed restrictions under Section 144 of CrPC in Srinagar district from Sunday midnight.
Article 370 of the Indian Constitution is an article that gives special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir while Article 35A allows the state to define the permanent residents of the state.
Jammu and Kashmir will be a union territory with a legislature, while the Ladakh region will be a union territory without a legislature, according to the government’s plan for Jammu and Kashmir, Shah said.
“The Ladakh division of the state of Jammu and Kashmir has a large area but is sparsely populated with a very difficult terrain. The people of Ladakh have long demanded that it be accorded the status of a Union Territory so that they can Realize their aspirations,” Shah said in a statement. “The Union Territory of Ladakh will be without a legislature,” the statement said.
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti criticized the government’s move.
