The government has set up a two-member committee to revise the age limit for entry into government jobs in response to demands from job seekers, who staged a protest in front of the caretaker adviser’s official residence in the city on Monday.

According to a MOPA notification, former secretary and adviser to the caretaker government Abdul Moeed Chaudhary has been made the convener of the committee while senior secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration (MOPA) has been appointed as the member secretary of the committee.

According to the notification, the committee will recommend a logical age limit for government jobs after thorough consideration of all relevant aspects. The members have been asked to submit their report within seven days.

Students and job seekers have demanded raising the age of entry into government jobs from 30 to 35.

UNB added: Earlier in the day, police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of job seekers who gathered in front of the Chief Adviser’s residence in Dhaka’s Ramna Park area.

Demanding that the maximum age of entry into government service be increased to 35 years, the protestors staged a protest dharna, which was followed by clashes with the security forces.

Eyewitnesses said the protest started around 1:45 a.m. when a large group of youths tried to gather in front of the chief adviser’s residence. When they moved towards the gate of Yamuna’s residence, the police blocked their way, leading to a clash.

The situation quickly escalated as officers resorted to tear gas and lathi charge to break up the gathering.
