Protesters demanding that the age limit for applications for public sector jobs be raised to 35 were stopped by the police when they tried to occupy the road in front of the Chief Adviser’s residence.
Around 1:30 p.m., police used tear gas shells and stun grenades to disperse the protesters, but they refused to leave the scene until 3 p.m.
Government job seekers had earlier held several rounds of protests demanding an increase in the age limit even during the Awami League government, but it was rejected.
As per their earlier announcement, the protesters gathered in front of the National Museum in Dhaka’s Shah Bagh on Monday morning. From there, several hundred protesters marched to the Chief Advisor’s residence on Minto Road.
Eyewitnesses say that the police stopped the protestors on reaching the state guesthouse Jamuna. After that the protestors took positions there and started shouting slogans.
The police tried several times to use tear shells and sound grenades to disperse the protests. Clashes also took place between the police and the protesters. The road was blocked for traffic during the protest.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Mohammad Israel Holder said:
“Early rallies and gatherings were banned in front of the residence of the chief adviser, but the protesters ignored the police ban and tried to occupy the front of the chief adviser’s resistance and we stopped them. Police are working to bring the situation under control.”
