The government has decided to set up the Eighth Pay Commission, which will determine how much government employees should earn. It is important that civil servants are paid adequately as their jobs are demanding and important. But if India wants to continue to grow and become a strong, developed country, we need to make major changes in the way salaries are decided.

The problem of government jobs today

Right now, the system has a few major problems:

  1. The skills gap: Many government jobs require specialized skills, but not all workers receive the right training.
  2. High costs: The government spends so much on salaries and pensions that it struggles to hire more people or fill vacancies.

Senior officers get lots of fancy perks, but their salaries are not as high as those paid by private companies. In addition, many retired government employees receive large pensions, making them some of the highest taxpayers.

At the entry level, it’s a different story. Government jobs promise job security and good pay, so millions of young people will wait for a government job rather than join the private sector, even if it means being unemployed for a long time. This creates two problems:

  • Unemployment is high because people do not want private sector jobs.
  • The government cannot hire enough people or adequately provide essential services such as health care, education, or policing.

What needs to be changed?

To address these issues, we need to rethink how government salaries are designed:

  1. Improve salaries: Instead of giving unnecessary perks and pensions, pay government employees commensurate with their work and let them save for retirement like private employees.
  2. Focus on young workers.: Employ more young people by lowering starting salaries but providing good training, job security, and opportunities for promotions.

Although India’s government workforce is small compared to other countries, it costs a lot to run. If we want a better system, the 8th Pay Commission should focus on making it more efficient and affordable. This way, the government can hire more skilled workers and provide better services to everyone.
