A group of people allegedly hacked the account of a payment gateway service provider and stole over Rs 16,180 crore from various bank accounts over a period of time, Thane police said.

Following a complaint by an officer of the Thane Crime Branch, the Nopada police of Thane on October 6 booked Sanjay Singh, Amul Indale @ Aman, Kedar @ Sameer Dege, Jitender Pandey and another unidentified person under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. FIR filed under , 409 (criminal breach of trust), 467, 468 (forgery), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) and provisions of Information Technology Act.

Police said that no arrests have been made yet.

According to the FIR, accused Jitendra Pandey worked as a relationship and sales manager with banks for the first 8 to 10 years.

The police suspect that the mega-racket, which has been going on for a long time, may have many players and may have pan-India ramifications affecting several companies and individuals, the official said.

According to the FIR, the crime is suspected of transferring money to thousands of bank accounts and several other accounts.

The police investigation team has recovered several fake documents from the accused.
