According to Mashaal Rehman (Android Authority), Google has slightly reworked its low-brightness feature in the first Android 16 developer preview. Rahman says that “Extra Dimmer” has apparently been changed to “Even Dimmer” with the latest OS build. These features are reportedly the same. However, the latter has only appeared on the Pixel 9.
Rahman says users must enable this “even dimmer” mode “manually” through the Accessibility page within Settings.
More importantly, the big change is that “Even Dimmer” will reportedly appear in Android’s brightness bar. It is likely that users can lower their brightness further through the Quick Settings menu.
The post reiterates that this feature is essentially an “extra dimming layer.” The findings suggest that Google intends for users to use “even dimming” in dark scenarios where you don’t want a blindingly bright display. It’s worth noting that these lower brightness levels can only be activated when the brightness bar is at “lowest”.

Google’s original project “ExtraDum” was discovered earlier this year during the Android 15 beta. Much of its functionality appears to be similar to what was seen during beta 1. Additionally, the report states that testers can find it within the Adaptive Brightness toggle through the Display Settings page. He made it so users only need to go into that mode and set it every time they want (more) low brightness.
Now, Google is apparently reworking it and keeping it out of the settings, users can quickly toggle, slide the bar and go. However, one concern is how such a very low brightness setting might affect people with PWM sensitivity.
Google has just released its Android 16 Developer Preview 1, which is packed with several new features. This extremely early release marks Google’s default schedule for the release of Android 16. According to its timeline, the next major OS is planned for a Q2 2025 release. Elsewhere, it looks like the software may include a new trick to quiet those pesky notifications.
Android 16 may have a “Notification Cooldown” feature that “softens” the volume/alertness of notifications that constantly notify you.
