Apple is reportedly working on an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered photo editing feature that it may unveil soon. The Cupertino-based tech company is hosting its Let’s Lose event on Tuesday, where it’s expected to introduce new iPad Air and iPad Pro models and a new Apple Pencil. It is said that during the event, the company may also tease its new AI feature, and will then introduce it in 2024. Notably, Apple researchers have also published a paper on an AI model capable of editing photos.

According to one Reports According to AppleInsider, Apple is working on an AI-powered feature called ‘Cleanup’ which is said to offer users “Photoshop-grade editing capabilities”. Citing people familiar with the matter, the report claims that the feature is currently being tested internally and is designed for the in-house Photos app. It added that the feature was being planned for macOS 15, but did not specify whether it would also be available on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

The feature is reportedly available in the Edit menu of the new version of the Photos app. There are three options Adjust, Filter and Crop and the Cleanup feature can be found in the Adjust menu. As far as it works, this feature is said to remove background objects from a part of the image, which can be selected using the brush tool. A similar tool is also available in Google’s Pixel smartphones.

Interestingly, earlier this year, Apple researchers published a Paper Entitled Guiding Instruction-Based Image Editing via Multimodal Large Language Models, it describes an AI model that can make complex image edits with simple gestures and actions. If the report about the cleanup feature is true, it is likely based on this LLM.

The report also highlights that there is a possibility that the tech giant might tease this feature during its Let loose event. It would make sense if the company plans to release the feature for the iPad as well. An earlier report suggested that Apple might introduce the new iPad Pro with an M4 chipset that has a new neural engine capable of running AI features. The company may also introduce it as an AI device.
