A new UI for custom instructions on ChatGPT is rolling out to some users 👀h/t @Makuh90 pic.twitter.com/brJ0uvX80oJanuary 9, 2025

I find that many ChatGPT users don’t know that you can already customize the way ChatGPT responds to you. On the website version of ChatGPT (via Access chatgpt.com) If you click on your account icon at the top right of the page, a menu appears where you can select ‘Customize ChatGPT’.
This opens an options screen that currently has two boxes where you can write custom instructions. In the first box ‘What would you like ChatGPT to know about you to better respond?’ While the second box is ‘How would you like to respond to ChatGPT?’
If you hover your cursor over the box there’s some help with suggestions for what to type, but not much. These are incredibly powerful options that can change the way you use ChatGPT. For example, as a little experiment I typed into ‘Like you are drunk’, ‘How would you respond to ChatGPT?’ box and click Save. Then when I asked him how it was he replied “hi… I’m like… kinda… giddy but, like, happy, you know? How is life going with you? 😄🍻” Of course, asking something serious after that results in hilarity, but it just goes to show you how powerful these custom options are. For example, you can ‘statistics or more persuasive’. You can type ‘support claims and arguments with evidence’ and you’ll start getting much better results.
It’s currently unclear if OpenAI is going to improve the ways you can customize ChatGPT, or if it’s just giving you some suggestions for ways to customize it already. is For example, you can type ‘Chitty’ in the box itself.
