Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sandeep Roy Rathore on Saturday announced that eight people have been arrested in connection with the murder of BSP state president K Armstrong. The Tamil Nadu BSP leader was brutally murdered by a mob near his residence in Chennai’s Perambur on July 5.

Rathore confirmed that Armstrong’s post-mortem has been conducted and reiterated that the situation in Chennai is calm. ‘We will leave no stone unturned in investigating this case from all angles. All other accused involved in this crime will be arrested,” he said, ruling out any political motives behind the murder.

The police commissioner added that Armstrong was attacked outside his home and had seven previous convictions, in which he had been acquitted. Rathore said police responded immediately to the alert, rushing Armstrong to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Ten special teams were formed to investigate, which led to the arrest of eight suspects within two hours, largely thanks to CCTV footage.

In a related development, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai criticized the security measures under the DM-led government. A leader of the party was strangled yesterday. There is no guarantee for the life of the common man in this DM-led state,” Annamalai remarked during the BJP’s state executive meeting.
