Education MDM platform MobileGuardian recently acknowledged a cyber attack that disrupted its services. The firm confirmed that the incident also wiped out thousands of devices connected to the platform.

MobileGuardian, an education-focused mobile device management tool, reportedly fell victim to a disruptive cyber attack earlier this month.

As per the details shared by him Incident report page, the service faced a cyber-attack on August 4, 2024, which they noticed after detecting an unauthorized activity on their platform. After this discovery, the firm immediately took the necessary steps to contain the attack.

However, it seems the damage was done by then, as the incident forced MDM to go offline. The attack resulted in thousands of connected devices being remotely wiped. Additionally, the firm also confirmed that several students lost their registration from Mobile Guardian due to the incident.

It is currently unclear how the incident occurred. But the firm confirmed it has halted its services to prevent further unauthorized access, limiting users’ access to their devices.

Mobile Guardian did not mention the exact number of students affected by this cyber attack. Nevertheless, they confirmed that they found no evidence of possible access to user data by attackers.

According to Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE), at least 13,000 devices belonging to students from 26 secondary schools were wiped during the incident.

The Ministry of Education announced the removal of MDM from all students’ devices, assuring support to restore the devices. According to them Statement,

As a precautionary measure, MOE will remove the Mobile Guardian device management application from all iPads and Chromebooks. Efforts are underway to safely restore these devices to normal use. MOE is considering other mitigation measures to control the use of learning support devices during this period.

Furthermore, the MOE assured that it would cooperate with the schools to cooperate. Affected students By deploying additional IT roving teams and providing learning resources.

While Singapore’s Ministry of Education has shared details publicly, the exact status of students in other regions of the world affected by the incident remains unclear.
