Umar Khalid has been in custody since September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in a case related to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Comedian Kanal Kamra X (formerly Twitter) and shared the post on Instagram, captioning it “The heart knows no concept of time.”

Bollywood actor Richa Chadha Posted a heart emoji in the comment section. Another comment read, “No words for this picture. Amazing to see Omar back.

Umar Khalid is out on a seven-day interim bail to attend a family wedding on December 18 by a civil court in Delhi. While he had sought a 10-day bail, the court granted him relief for only seven days from December 28 to January 3 subject to certain conditions. While out on bail, he was banned from using social media and was only allowed to see friends and family.

He will have to surrender before the jail authorities on the evening of January 3, 2025 as his bail is about to expire.

Allegations against Umar Khalid

Umar Khalid He has been in jail for over four years since 13 September 2020 under the Serious Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. He has been accused of a larger conspiracy to incite violence during the 2020 communal clashes in Delhi following protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The Delhi Police has alleged that Umar Khalid made ‘inflammatory’ speeches which led to heightened tension during the riots. He has also been accused of receiving financial support from abroad to incite violence in India.

Previous bail applications.

During the last four years of detention, Umar Khalid has applied for bail several times on grounds of equity and delay in the trial. However, his bail hearings were delayed or denied on several occasions.

In a recent bail hearing in the Delhi High Court on December 7, 2024, Umar Khalid argued that the police had not yet produced any physical evidence to link him to the alleged conspiracies.
