FA Cup third round shocks. Another one from the archives. Oh Jamie. Still, a Champions League winners’ medal was a decent way to end the season.
Burnley 1-0 Liverpool – 18 January 2005
It was Reds boss Rafa Benitez’s first taste of competition in his first season at Anfield, and while he rested a number of his first-choice players, Steve Cotterill’s Clarets were given all the motivation they needed.
The game was won in the second half, when a low cross from Richard Chappello prompted Traore to attempt a 360-degree drag back at the far post but unfortunately for the Frenchman, he made it all the way before curling the ball into the net. Made it wrong. . (Source: thefa.com)
Everton fan Matt Hobbs writes about Shaun Dye’s time at Everton.
“It is entirely fair to say that Everton have lost four of 16 games in all competitions and kept five clean sheets. It is also fair to say that they have won eight games in total in 2024 and last season. More than any other Premier League club has scored 30 open play goals since inception.
“As always with numbers, context is everything: Everton haven’t lost all that often because they don’t try to win. They collect clean sheets because they don’t try to score. Dyche Everton deserves a lot of credit for navigating through very murky waters, especially amid a number of points deductions from last season, but as a result he has lost any of the most valuable assets to any football supporter. By trading things Denied: Hope.
“Belief starts with the manager and it has become increasingly apparent that Dye just doesn’t believe this squad is capable of doing more. Only time will tell if he was right but football is so unpredictable. China is one that this Everton fan in particular thinks is worth trying to find out.
We have ourselves a beer discussion. Probably more Xb than Xg.
Bill Preston writes: “I don’t want to be that person, but are you sure of your calculations? Let’s say you’re right that the average man drinks 850 pints a year, which is about two and a half days. There are 46 million over 18s in the country. Let’s say half are men; that’s 23 million multiplied by 19.5 billion pints between 2002 and 2023 6 billion pints made. Do we really import the balance?”
FA Cup third round shocks. It’s probably best not to mention it to David Moyes, who is now 1/7 favorite with the bookies to return to Everton.
Shrewsbury 2-1 Everton – January 4, 2003
Shrews were battling it out at the bottom of the Football League when they faced an ever-rising Everton side challenging for Europe and boasting a young Wayne Rooney in their ranks. But David Moyes’ side suffered a setback as the Toffees held on to the River Severn thanks to a brace from Nigel Jameson.
It was his first free-kick in the first half, and after Nicklas Alexandersson leveled things, it looked like a replay was underway at Goodison Park. And with just over a minute left on the clock, Jameson glanced a header to seal a fourth-round tie with Chelsea. (from thefa.com)

Jason Pegg, general manager of the bar, said: “We are huge supporters of Tamworth FC, and this weekend’s FA Cup match against Spurs is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the club and the community. What better way to show support than to have a little fun? A winning goal means more than just a place in the record books – it’s the stuff of legends. We want to be part of the excitement are, and provide magical moments What better way than to offer a player free beer for life?
Will Ange be in the mood to accept an invitation from the Tamworth hero?
By the way, I’ve crunched the numbers. The average price of a pint of beer in Tamworth is £4.50. The average bloke gets 850 pints a year. If the Tamworth hero sticks to it – ignoring the NHS recommendation of 14 units a week and his manager telling him not to turn up to training angry – and get free beer for the next 50 years By doing this he would have saved himself 50 x 850 x £. 14.50 = £191,250. My God have pitchers thought this through?
Here’s a rundown of the Premier League final table last season…

Fast forward to the present day and Forest are third in the Premier League table and Luton are 20th in the Championship. It is in stark contrast and overwhelming for the Luton bosses, who parted ways with boss Rob Edwards yesterday.

Liverpool host Accrington Stanley The FA Cup (12.15pm) on Saturday and guess what Arne Slott knows. that Advertisement
“I don’t know much I’ve only been here for half a year but I know about the milk ad! There was a clip about it. I know people from the area play for this club too. And I I know a lot about this team that I will learn more about today.
Accrington are currently 19th in League Two in case you were wondering although they have won their last two games.
Liverpool boss Arne Slott didn’t quite play down the Kavratsakhelia rumors at his press conference earlier this morning.
Speaking about the Georgian star, the Reds manager said: “When you say he’s linked with clubs, we’re all linked! Kavratskhilya, it’s January, and I said after West Ham, I got links. Don’t despair. At the end of the window, almost all of these stories are false, so the rumors keep going but no comments from me.

Go back to the Everton game last night and the father vs son story never unfolded As Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson refused to bring on Tyler Young to play against Dede Ashley. Keeping it in the family, surely that explanation would have gotten a nod of approval from Darren’s old man.
“It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench but I have to do what I think is best for the team,” explained the Peterborough boss. “As much as I wanted to get Tyler, if the game was 2-0 at that point I would have put it on, but at 1-0, I had to step up. I have to try and get something out of the game and do what I can. Better for my team. One of their players popped one out of order. We’re not a charity case.
Jonathan Wilson reflects on Shaun Dye’s Everton exit. That number is staggering and perhaps currency for Dye as he looks for employment in the future. But the style of football was, let’s be honest, quite unusual.

Everton have lost just four of their last 16 in all competitions.
-
Everton have kept five clean sheets in their last eight games and have held Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City to draws in the past month.
