After the Wear OS 5 update, two of Google’s past Pixel watches have suffered from ugly issues. Because of this, the company has reportedly held off on major software updates for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2. Google has confirmed it. 9to5Google Today (September 27). According to the post, the company says the software update bricked some users’ devices.
“… In the meantime, we have paused the WearOS 5 rollout and are actively working on a resolution,” a Google spokesperson told the publication.
We’ve heard their reports, courtesy of members of the Android Central forums. One user, goombah88, said, “I just got the update and it broke my PW2. I have a black screen with a bluetooth symbol with a line under it.” The user went on to say that he lost swiping functionality and long pressing the crown for reboot/shutdown did not help.
A follow-up comment from another user reveals that their OG Pixel watch took about four hours to complete the Wear OS 5 update from Tuesday (September 24). Their device doesn’t appear to be locked up after the patch, which 9to5 also reported.
Not every device suffers from this problem. However, its existence is a cause for concern for some.

This development over the past three days is unfortunate because users of the previous generation Pixel Watch have been waiting all year for Wear OS 5. Google dropped the update on September 24, which included the monthly security patch. It was a major patch for devices running OS 3.5 or OS 4 and fixed a number of bugs in all past devices.
More importantly, Wear OS 5 was the star of the major update. Google teased that there are “new features” but didn’t elaborate. The post informed us of updates to the Grid View app launcher, camera controls, and Pixel Recorder functionality.
Originally, the Wear OS 5 update was supposed to continue hitting watches until next week. However, with the devices currently in use, this is no longer the case. We can only hope that Google finds out about this issue and fixes it soon. Right now, Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 owners trying to update their devices won’t find anything available.
