The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and Sunday, with light to moderate rain expected in adjoining plains. Peak snow is expected Saturday night into Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Center in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh has issued a “yellow watch”, warning of thundershower, light rain and thundershowers between January 4 and 2018 in various districts including Kannur, Lahol Spiti, Shimla, Kangra, Mandi and Chamba. A storm is predicted. 6.
“There is an active Western Disturbance located over the Western Himalayan region. In the next 4-5 days, light to moderate snowfall will occur over the Western Himalayan region. According to the latest weather bulletin of IMD, “Light to moderate widespread rain/snowfall is likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilghat-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on January 04 to 06 and Himachal Pradesh on January 05 and 06. Isolated heavy rain over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on 4th and 5th and Himachal Pradesh on 5th and 6th. (≥6.5 cm)/snowfall (≥65 cm) very likely.
Temperatures rose across Kashmir during the night. GulmargNorth Kashmir, a popular skiing spot, recorded a minimum of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, a significant increase from the previous night’s minus 8.6 degrees. Pahalgam, an important base camp for the Amarnath pilgrimage in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
In Srinagar, the mercury settled at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the previous night’s minus 2.6 degrees. Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7.3 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in the valley. Konibal in Pampore recorded minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, while North Kashmir’s Kupwara and South Kashmir’s Kokarnag recorded minus 1.6 degrees Celsius and minus 5.5 degrees Celsius respectively.
Flight operations at Srinagar airport affected
Dense fog enveloped large parts of Kashmir, affecting flight operations badly. Srinagar Airport News agency PTI quoted officials as saying that visibility dropped to about 300 meters.
Officials added that the minimum temperature has increased in most parts of the valley. However, dense fog disrupted air traffic, delaying several flights and diverting one due to low visibility. Minimum visibility for flight operations is approximately 1,100 meters.
Flight operations resumed around noon when visibility at the airport improved. The first flight of the day landed in Srinagar at 11.48 am, officials added.
Fog conditions in Delhi and other states

Isolated areas of North Madhya Pradesh and Bihar may experience dense fog on January 4, while Assam and Meghalaya may experience it till January 5. Uttar Pradesh is expected to witness dense fog conditions from January 7 to 9.
