For the record, I do not own socks with sloths on them. Argyle pattern? Stripes? Absolutely. I have three pairs with the CNET logo on them. But no laziness.

Chat GPT thinks I do, though, and also think this fact might get me matches on Hinge, or Bumble, or any dating app that has the guts to ask me a random fact about myself.

Here’s a random fact about me: When I tested how ChatGPT could work to rewrite my dating app profile, the experimental AI chatbot tried to turn me into a cry-manic pixie dream girl. Who forgets to water her “jungle” of houseplants, dances to her favorites. Looking for “tunes” and “a weird companion” to go on *shudders* “adventures” with.

In the past few months, Humanity is discovering the potential of AI tools. With a fast-paced mix of horror and fascination. Art created by artificial intelligence Very good — except that it rips off human artists. Chat GPT Can write songs.but does that mean that creativity no longer resides in the penthouse of a building where a robot doesn’t have a key card?

When I first read a PR pitch that mentioned ChatGPT could be used to write and respond to bios on dating apps, I casually scoffed at the nonsense, “But of course. ” Then I started thinking about what kind of dater AI could be. Can I create the world’s most effective dating profile through the power of machine learning?

I set about creating prompts, starting simple, then moving ChatGPT into ever-increasing chaos.

Prompt: “Write a 500-character dating app bio for a woman who likes music, books, and houseplants.”

Answer: “Music lover, bookworm, and proud plant parent. I spend my free time singing along to my favorite tunes, diving into the latest bestseller, and growing my own houseplants.” Pay attention to the collection. Ready to join me on spontaneous adventures, cozy nights, and trips to the local nursery, let’s watch while drinking coffee and discussing our favorite bonus points!

Gross an exclamation point? In a Jio?! I never will.

Prompt: Write a funny one-sentence answer to the dating app prompt: “My zombie apocalypse plan is…”

Answer: “My zombie apocalypse plan is to teach the zombies the cha-cha slide, because you can never have too much cardio in a crisis.”

I stared at the answer. It’s a bit funny. Cardio in a crisis? Is it from something? Does ChatGPT understand basic nonsense?

I tried to add some subtlety and subtext.

Prompt: “Write an opener message for a dating app but don’t ask this person out yet. You’ve watched the latest episode of The Last of Us and you’re feeling emotionally drained.”

Hey, if Bill Bobby can trap his soulmate in the middle of a fungal apocalypse, maybe there’s still hope for everyone else.

Answer: “Oh yeah! I just finished watching the most recent episode of The Last of Us and I’m getting a little emotional. I couldn’t help but notice that we both enjoy the game. The world and all the feelings that come from it?”

Can you fade yourself out of existence like the last flicker of light from a star that died years ago?

Then I asked ChatGPT if it believes in life after love.

The worst offender of them all sent a spider shard into my soul within the first two words.

Prompt: Write a funny opener message for a dating app, but don’t ask the person on a date yet. That person shares your interest in cats and indie music.

Answer: “Meow there! I couldn’t help but notice our shared love of cats and indie music from the 2010s. I have a feeling we’d love to talk about our favorite fur babies and Fleet Foxes. Can spend hours debating the best album. Join forces and start our own feline-friendly indie band?”

Meow there. Meow there? If someone sent me this greeting, I would delete the entire dating app, put my phone in a plastic bag, shove it as deep as possible into the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, and leave the rest of my life. I will spend my life training pigeons. Give hard copies of memes to my friends.

Trying to process my emotions, I called. TikToker Amelia Samson. Samson makes TikToks about the chemical fire that is modern dating and especially about mind-bendingly weird and offensive profiles. Apps. She voices the exasperated disbelief you feel every time someone writes “just ask” in their bio.

“Oh no,” she said, as I read her “meow there” response over the phone, “Chet GPT is like the rudest guy you’ve ever met.”

There was a lot to unpack. Is it okay to use content from ChatGPT as long as it’s accurate and you need help packaging what you want to say about yourself? Do other daters need to know you’ve used ChatGPT? (I’d sure like to know.) What if you start talking about cha-cha sliding with zombies on your profile but can’t pull off that level of antics in real life?

“I think there are ways to use it, especially with dating apps and to write things about yourself that are honest and meaningful,” Samson said, “(but) as it develops Lives, and grows and becomes smarter, people can start to abuse it, and that’s what I think is so scary about it.”

Dating apps already struggle with issues like filters, bots and catfishing. The Federal Trade Commission reported that people were lost. $547 million for romance scams In 2021 And even if some hopeful dater with a ChatGPT account isn’t trying to get you to pay for surgery on your pet iguana, misrepresentation is an age-old problem in the dating world.

The jig is up, folks. You never finished reading Infinite Joust.

I should never have asked ChatGPT to write my dating profile.

Fake knowledge

Once upon a time, fibbing about yourself would require some creativity. With ChatGPT, I didn’t have to use my brain power to invent false details about myself. It gave me a legendary expert knowledge of Asian street foods, a penchant for crying in the car, Everybody Hurts by REM, and the story of getting lost in Tuscany and ending up on a goat farm.

“(It’s) taking a lot of legwork to create a lie,” Samson said.

If that sounds like handwriting, well, we all have our hobbies.

I reached out to Bumble and OkCupid to see how familiar apps like them are with this particular use of AI.

Bumble said he’s keeping an eye on the development of AI, broadly, and how it could impact both his community and business. “We’re always evaluating the latest technology to consider what makes sense to add to our products,” a spokesperson said via email.

OkCupid said it got ChatGPT to write some questions to ask daters, like what they value most in a partner or how they like to spend the weekend.

WooPlus, a dating app for plus-size datersA ChatGPT Help button has been added that people can use when they need help responding to messages from potential matches. According to a blog post, the feature resulted in a 200 percent increase in message engagement, but the app also acknowledged that some users said they were fooled by the idea.

But at least for now, there may be some hope for those worried about mixing AI and dating: There’s no way the excitement of some of these cues can catch a match. After we talked, Samson asked ChatGPT about a fun animal fact — the kind you can use in a prompt, and he gave her an answer about how sloths (with sloths again! ) how does it come out.

“Did you know that sloths only defecate once a week and the feces they produce are so large that they can be up to a third of the sloth’s body weight?”

ChatGPT was not done by playing Casanova.

“Dating me is like getting a front-row ticket to a non-stop, heart-pounding thrill ride.

“One thing you should know about me is that I tend to do spontaneous interpretive dances at inappropriate times, but that’s how I express my happiness.”

“…I can read every line from The Office.”

yes friends ChatGPT is culling from vast swathes of data, boiling over with all the pop culture references imaginable — all the TV shows that have sent light and sound wavelengths into our faces. Philo Farnsworth dreamed of photo transmission Plowing a potato field in horizontal lines across receivers — this modern AI fell back on itself like every other bored online dater out there.

Prompt: Write a snarky one-sentence kicker end to a commentary piece about how bad ChatGPT is at writing dating profiles.

Answer: “Chat GPT seems to be better at generating responses than generating romance.”
