WhatsApp has announced that it will soon be rolling out a major change that will make managing contacts on LinkedIn devices a simpler process. Currently, users need to save a contact on their primary device for it to appear on WhatsApp with the saved name. However, this is now expected to change soon, as announced by WhatsApp. Users will be able to add or manage contacts on WhatsApp for web, Windows and other connected devices.

In a blog PostWhatsApp highlighted that the only way to add contacts is to save it on the primary device or scan the QR code. With its upcoming functionality, users will be able to do so from any device. The change will be rolled out initially on WhatsApp Web and Windows and will eventually roll out to other connected devices as well.

The instant messaging platform is introducing another important feature – the ability to save contacts exclusively on WhatsApp. This feature is said to come in handy when separating personal and professional contacts or when sharing the phone with others. Users will be given a choice whether to save a particular contact only on WhatsApp or to sync it to the smartphone as well.

The feature uses a novel encrypted storage system called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS), key transparency and leverages WhatsApp’s Hardware Security Module (HSM) technologies. According to WhatsApp, contact information is stored using a strong encryption key generated on the client’s device. This is achieved only when the client verifies the identity of the underlying device. Contacts saved on WhatsApp will be restored if the user ever loses their phone or changes device. Additionally, they can create or customize contact lists if they have separate personal and work WhatsApp accounts on the same device.

Thanks to these features, WhatsApp says it is moving in a direction where it will eventually let users manage and save contacts through usernames. The company claims that this will enhance privacy by eliminating the need to share phone numbers to communicate on WhatsApp.
