Maher Shah –.I main accused Mumbai BMW hit and run case – Arrested on Tuesday evening. A total of 12 people including Shah’s mother and two sisters were detained.

Police believe the mother and sisters helped Shah – son of politician Rajesh Shah, a member of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction – evade arrest for more than 72 hours.

The police now have to decide whether the three women arrested from Shahpur will be registered as accused.

The police formed several teams to nab Meher Shah, who was eventually traced to an apartment in Virar, 65 km from Mumbai. He was taken to Worli police station.

“They take votes, treat us like garbage”: husband

However, the slain woman’s husband has rejected Shah’s arrest, saying the odds are still stacked against him and his family seeking justice. They said we are poor, who is there to support us… Today he will be sent to jail, tomorrow he will be produced in court and then get bail.

“He was arrested three days after the accident. Why was he hiding? If he didn’t do anything, if he didn’t have alcohol or drugs, why did he run?” she said while crying.

Congress on the attack

In an expected political addition to the narrative, Congress leader Varsha Gaekwad came to the police station and declared “this is not a beating… this is murder” and demanded appropriate charges.

“… If he had stopped the car, it wouldn’t have happened. Instead, he accelerated and dragged her for a long time and she died…” he said. He also criticized the delay in the arrest.

“It took three days for the police to arrest the accused… Now alcohol is not detected in his body. Why did this happen? He should have been arrested the same day…” he said.

Meher Shah was reportedly driving the BMW – after spending Rs 18,730 at a bar in Juhu, where he partied for hours with four friends – when it collided with a two-wheeler at 5.30am on Sunday.

The deceased woman has been identified as 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa. She was accompanied by her husband Pradeep who escaped with injuries. The two were reportedly shopping for fish to feed the family.

Hours earlier, police sources told NDTV that they believe Shah, his mother and his sister went underground together after the accident, and that the two may have helped cover it up.

The father – Rajesh Shah – was arrested on Sunday but released on bail a day later.

The only accused still in jail is Rajarshi Badawat – the driver allegedly forced to hand over control of the BMW to Meher Shah. He may have been asked to pretend that he was driving when the accident happened.

Badawat was sent to police custody till Thursday.

All three face multiple charges, including felony murder that amounts to murder.

Police sources revealed a rough sequence of events to NDTV.

According to the police, on Sunday, Meher Shah left home for a party at Vice Global Tapas Bar. At the time, he was driving a Mercedes registered to his father. He was accompanied by four friends.

All five were in the bar until 11 pm. NDTV has seen a copy of the bill for Rs 18,730.

At 1.15am (on Monday) Meher Shah drove his friends back home – in a Mercedes.

At 4 am he asked Badawat to take him for a ‘joy ride’ in the BMW on Marine Drive.

After driving up and down Marine Drive at 5am, the car was diverted home.

Police believe that the car reached Kalanagar when Shah exchanged seats with Badawat.

If true, it means that Shah was driving the car when he hit the bike at 5.30 am.

The woman was dragged for 1.5 km.

Horrifying details of the crash have emerged, including CCTV footage showing Ms Nakhwa was dragged for 1.5km after the collision before the BMW stopped.

Police said the footage also indicated that Shah fraudulently swapped seats, pulled the woman’s body out from under the car and left it on the road. The vehicle was then driven away.

But, in an even more horrifying turn of events, the driver allegedly reversed the vehicle to run over his body once again, before he drove out of the CCTV’s field of vision. .

Badawat, therefore, was “aware of his actions and helped the other accused”, police told a court which heard a criminal charge of murder against the driver.

The husband spoke to NDTV and expressed his grief over his wife’s shock death.

“I ran after the vehicle for half a kilometer, but the body was not found. I was crying, shouting, but he did not stop, if he had stopped even for a second, nothing would have happened,” said Mr Nakhwa.

“No one will get immunity”: CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed concern over the “rise in hit-and-run incidents in Maharashtra”. He said that his government will not tolerate the attempt of powerful and influential people to manipulate the system by misusing their position and such misuse of power.

“No person, whether rich, influential, or scion of bureaucrats or ministers, belonging to any party, will get immunity as long as I am the chief minister of the state. I do not tolerate injustice” Shinde said in a post on X.
