Summary
Voting for the Maharashtra Assembly elections took place in a single phase on November 20. These 2024 results are coming in the backdrop of political upheaval in the state. In 2019, the BJP-led alliance won a clear majority, but the Shiv Sena soon left the alliance and formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government along with the Congress and the NCP.
A subsequent split in the Shiv Sena resulted in one faction joining the BJP-led Mahawati and forming the government in 2022 under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Despite opposition from Uddhav Thackeray’s faction, Shinde’s faction retained the name of the original Shiv Sena. The NCP also split in 2023, with one group led by Ajit Pawar retaining the original name, while another led by Sharad Pawar split off. Today’s election results will tell how voters in Nanded and the rest of Maharashtra have responded to these changing political dynamics.
