Narendra Modi took oath as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time along with his new Cabinet and council of ministers at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday evening. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan during the ceremony that began at 7.15 pm. Modi’s oath-taking was followed immediately by top BJP aides Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari – the defence, home and transport ministers in his last government, respectively.

The new government team includes 30 Cabinet ministers, 5 Ministers of State with Independent Charge and 36 Ministers of State.

Members of Parliament (MPs) who took oath as members of the Council of Ministers include Narendra Modi, JP Nadda, Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh, Piyush Goyal, and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Other appointees include HD Kumaraswamy of (JDS), Chirag Paswan (LJP), Ram Nath Thakur JD(U), Jitan Ram Manji (HAM-S), Jayant Chaudhary (RLD), Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal (Soneylal)), Rammohan Naidu (TDP), and Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani (TDP). Pratap Rao Jadhav of the Shiv Sena was also inducted into the new government as Union Minister of State.

Who was in attendance at the swearing-in ceremony?

– Industrialists like Mukesh Ambani attended with his sons Anant and Akash and son-in-law Anand Piramal, while Gautam Adani was there with his wife Priti and brother Rajesh Adani.

– Actors Shah Rukh Khan, Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, Anupam Kher, Vikrant Massey, and singer Kailash Kher were present.

– Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud attended the event with his wife, and former President Ram Nath Kovind also attended.

– Seven heads of state attended the event as part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy – Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu, Vice-President of Seychelles Ahmed Afif, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay.

Lok Sabha election result numbers

The BJP bagged 240 seats in the recently held Lok Sabha election, and the National Democratic Alliance secured a majority of 293 seats out of 543 Lok Sabha seats. On the other hand, the Congress won 99 seats in the general election, while the INDIA bloc bagged 234 seats.

Underscoring the strong ties between countries, Bangladesh Foreign Minister, Muhammad Hasan Mahmud said that Sheikh Hasina has expressed her willingness to work with the new government in the future to strengthen the ties, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath as India’s Prime Minister for a third consecutive term.

Sheikh Hasina was invited to the oath-taking ceremony that took place on Sunday (June 9) at Rashtrapati Bhavan here in the national capital.

“…PM Sheikh Hasina attended the oath-taking ceremony (of PM Modi and the council of ministers) and after that, she had a one-to-one meeting with PM Narendra Modi, where she again congratulated him and the NDA for winning the elections. She expresses her willingness to work with the new government in future to strengthen the ties,” Hasan Mahmud told ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has retained 34 ministers from his outgoing council of ministers including as many as 19 with Cabinet berths.

The outgoing Cabinet ministers who took oath again on Sunday included Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, reflecting the prime minister’s emphasis on continuity and experience in his third term,

Annapurna Devi is the only one to be promoted from Minister of State rank to Cabinet minister, while L Murugan is the only person from the last council of ministers to get a berth again despite having lost the Lok Sabha election. He is already a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Some ministers have been brought back after a gap, including BJP chief J P Nadda who served as a minister in Modi’s first term.
