We can understand paying for premium AI model tires to an extent, as long as it’s a really worthwhile expense and you’re getting your money’s worth. As for that new, super-expensive ChatGPT Pro tier, though, there’s no reason the average person would need it.

OpenAI has just announced ChatGPT Pro, a new premium tier that goes above the ChatGPT Plus tier. This plan gives users unlimited access to the o1-mini, GPT-4o, and the powerful o1 model with advanced audio capabilities.

The main feature of ChatGPT Pro is the “o1 Pro Mode”, a version of the o1 model that increases computing power to handle the most complex problems. Internal testing by OpenAI shows that the new o1 Pro mode excels in fields such as data science, programming, and forensic analysis, producing more consistently accurate output when it has to think about complex answers. It happens. The o1 Pro Mod also seems to outperform its predecessors in challenging benchmarks involving math, science and coding.

This improved performance comes at the cost of increased processing time. If you ever use ChatGPT Pro (which you probably shouldn’t), you’ll see a progress bar while o1 pro mode generates its responses. OpenAI is also awarding ChatGPT Pro grants to medical researchers at leading US institutions. These grants aim to support advances in areas such as immunotherapy for rare diseases, aging and cancer.

The company plans to expand Pro’s capabilities to handle more computationally intensive tasks and make many of its features available to subscribers of other plans. That last part might just be a good way here, because the plan is Expensive. The new ChatGPT Pro tier commands $200 per month if you want to use it. This is 10 times the cost of ChatGPT Plus, and other premium chatbot subscriptions. That’s a lot, and we don’t think most people will get their money’s worth. It should also be noted that the plan does not include any API access, which is billed separately. And it’s still an AI, which means even the $200/month rank might be wrong.

If you have a legitimate use case for it, the plan is available now. Almost no one should use it.
