The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the arrest of an unidentified man in Enugu State who was involved in a procurement fraud worth N1.09 billion.
While the details surrounding the arrest were not specified, the police noted that the case was investigated by the NPF-National Cyber Crime Centre, adding that the funds have been recovered.
This was disclosed on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of the Force, Olumiowa Adejobi, in a statement issued at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, titled, “Enugu State Government Account Never Hacked – Police Confirmation does.”
According to the statement, reports of account hacking are false, as it was a case of procurement fraud and not a cyber breach.
“The Nigeria Police Force unequivocally rejects the false narrative and rumor circulating online about the alleged hack of the official account of the Enugu State Government, resulting in the theft of N1.09 billion.
“The claim is totally baseless. There was no hacking of the Enugu State Government account, and allegations of theft of N1.09 billion are totally baseless.
“The case, which was investigated by the NPF-National Cyber Crime Center (NCCC), was a procurement fraud case, not a cyber breach. The suspect in connection with the fraud has been arrested, and The funds have already been recovered,” the statement read in part.
“The Enugu State Government and other ministries, departments, and agencies of government and corporate firms are in partnership with the NCCC, and have put in place comprehensive and robust security protocols to safeguard their financial systems,” it added.
Police urged the public to avoid false information and always verify the credibility of news sources.
On January 2, 2025, the Enugu State Police Command released its 2024 Operational Report, to highlight Significant achievements in combating crime and ensuring public safety.
According to the report which was signed by his spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe, a total of 1072 suspects were arrested for various criminal offenses including armed robbery, kidnapping, murder and cult while 21 AK 47 rifles, a sub-machine gun were recovered. Including 200 firearms were recovered. A G-3 rifle and 1,863 rounds of ammunition.
Additionally, 124 vehicles including motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles were recovered.
He noted that about 100 hostages or hostage victims were rescued during the period.
