Guests at Resorts World on the Las Vegas Strip got a nasty surprise this week — their rooms are inspected daily, even if they have a “do not disturb” sign hanging outside.
The inspection, during which cyber security experts visually inspect the room for computer hacking equipment, is believed to be Resorts World’s response to two large, back-to-back cyber conventions in the city. Black Hat USA kicked off Saturday in Mandalay Bay and runs through Thursday, while Def Con 32 will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Both conventions attract cybersecurity experts, government officials, corporate executives, and, inevitably, hackers to check out the latest developments in cybersecurity and participate in discussions on industry issues.
Resorts World’s inspections began on Monday and will end on Sunday. In a statement issued on Las Vegas Review Journal According to the newspaper, the casino-resort “has done so with the utmost respect for the privacy and convenience of our guests,” following strict protocols to ensure minimal disruption to their stay.
Once heck, twice shy
Although Resorts World was not targeted, in September 2023, two of the largest casino operators on the Las Vegas Strip, MGM and Caesars Entertainment, were both attacked by members of the hacking collective Scattered Spider.
MGM refused to pay the ransom, a decision that cost him more. $100 million in revenue loss The company’s American resorts were highly sought after. The attack was interrupted. The Caesars reacted differently, deciding to pay the ransom, reportedly around $15 million.
While authorities have not linked the cyber attack to cyber conventions in Las Vegas, Resorts World is taking no chances.
“These inspections are standard practice at many of Las Vegas’ premier hotels, especially during times of heightened risk, where vigilance is critical,” his statement read. “This inspection is a precautionary measure intended to enhance our on-site security presence (both physical security and cyber security), maintain the integrity of our property services, and protect our guests, business partners, and staff. To protect against potential threats of cyber attack.”
